Encinitas Whole Foods

It was the grand opening for Whole Foods Market in Encinitas today. ‘Special Event’ signs were posted along Coast Highway, and crowds of people gathered around the storefront for free tastings and product promotions.  I smiled to myself thinking, “San Clemente will be getting something even better.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love Whole Foods. It’s a special treat to make a stop at Whole Foods in La Jolla or Pasadena. I walk the aisles like a kid in a candy shop, throwing coveted items into my cart left and right.

But, shopping at a food co-op is an even more satisfying experience. Not only will the San Clemente Community Market carry coveted items not found at Trader Joe’s or Ralphs, but it will also carry a vibe created by the community.  As a food cooperative, the San Clemente Community Market will be owned by us; those of us willing to invest as member-owners in order to create a market that is San Clemente’s very own.  The market will not only carry the food we want to eat, but will provide a friendly place to shop, and serve as a center of the community.

I am looking forward to shopping at the San Clemente Community Market, and curious about what kind of vibe we will create.  In the meantime, I’ll be doing whatever I can to help make it happen.
