Food Policy Statement

One of the key aspects that separates a community-owned entity from private industry is a ‘social conscience.’   For that, one of the important documents that the SCCM Steering Committee has been developing is a Food Policy Statement.  This Policy will be formally adopted into SCCM’s corporate policies and will be the directive for all future purchasing desicions.

The Steering Committee will be finalizing verbiage and voting on the “Food Policy Statement.”  this coming Tuesday, November 15th.

Here is our draft Policy Statement:

“We will strive to provide whole food choices and products that are fresh, in season, minimally packaged, reasonably priced and produced by businesses with sound/ethical practices. Our product choices will be evaluated carefully using the following selection criteria in order of preference:

  • Locally produced
  • Certified Organic
  • Fair Trade Certified
  • Produced using sustainable practices

We will give preference to the purest product lines and avoid products containing high fructose corn syrup, GMO’s and nitrates as well as products that have been irradiated.  We will not carry any products that contain the following:

  • Artificial colors, flavors or preservatives; including MSG
  • Artificial or chemical sweeteners
  • Trans‐fats or hydrogenated oils

Our meat and dairy products will be free of artificial growth hormones and antibiotics as well as meeting our requirement of cage-free living conditions.

We will purchase products from cooperatives and independent business whenever possible.

We will not carry products that have been tested on animals.

 

Known exceptions will only be made with the approval of the management team and will be posted accordingly.
